Kyiv Harvest Celebration to Support Humanitarian Demining in Ukraine

Humanitarian demining in Ukraine is supported not only through government and international programmes. Businesses, community initiatives and members of the public are also finding ways to contribute. One example is a Ferragosto celebration in Kyiv that will combine a traditional harvest event with support for clearing Ukrainian land.

Ferragosto with a Ukrainian purpose

On 15 August, Kyiv restaurant Italiiska Redaktsiia will hold Ferragosto, the traditional Italian summer and harvest celebration.

This year, the event will also highlight humanitarian demining and the importance of returning Ukrainian land to safe and productive use.

A special menu will be prepared for the event. Proceeds from dishes sold from the special menu on 15 August will be transferred through UNITED24 to support humanitarian demining in Ukraine.

From cleared fields to new harvests

For Ukraine's agricultural sector, humanitarian demining has a direct impact on the ability of farmers to return to work.

Agricultural land contaminated by explosive hazards cannot be safely cultivated until the necessary survey and clearance activities have been completed.

According to Ukraine's Ministry of Economy and Environment, more than 16,400 hectares of agricultural land have already been returned to use through the state Humanitarian Demining programme, with clearance costs for participating farmers fully covered by the state.

Different ways to support demining

The Ferragosto initiative demonstrates that support for humanitarian demining can also come through community and business initiatives.

Events of this kind can both raise funds and draw attention to the relationship between safe land, agricultural production and the recovery of local communities.

The harvest theme is particularly symbolic: before Ukrainian fields can produce crops again, they first need to be safe.

Returning safe land to people

Humanitarian demining creates the conditions needed to return affected territories to productive life — from farming to local economic development.

PSM Ukraine Group supports initiatives that raise awareness of explosive contamination in Ukraine and the importance of systematically returning land to safe use.
