Ukraine and Syria have signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in mine action. The agreement was signed during a Ukrainian delegation’s visit to Damascus and provides a framework for sharing experience and developing approaches to the clearance of war-affected land.
One area of cooperation is the return of cleared land to productive use. The two countries will also focus on information management systems, including the recording of contaminated areas, the use of available data and methods for prioritising land for further survey and clearance.
Ukraine is prepared to share practical experience with Syrian specialists. This includes training personnel in non-technical survey, clearance and quality management. During the visit, the Ukrainian delegation also visited areas where Syrian teams are carrying out clearance work.
The agreement sets out the areas in which the countries intend to cooperate. Its practical implementation will depend on subsequent joint projects and arrangements.
